How To Get an Irish Passport


A passport is an internationally recognised travel document confirming your identity and nationality and if you want to apply for an Irish passport then you must be an Irish citizen.  Your passport is an important legal document and you should ensure that it is kept in a secure place. Each Irish passport carries a unique identification number and you should  keep a  record  of your number, in the event that your passport is lost or stolen.


You must be an Irish citizen in order to eligible for an Irish passport. You have a right to apply for a passport if you are aged 18 years or over. If you are under 18 then you have to give a consent of both parents in writing in order to get your own passport.  Titles such as Mr, Mrs, Dr, sir, lord, lady are not entered on the Irish passports. Documentation required

In all applications for new passport, as well as the completed application form, you must submit.

  • Four passport size photographs and two of which must be signed by witness as per instruction provided with the application form.
  • Certified copy of photographic ID, for example, driving licence, college identification card, passport from other country.
  • Proof of name, for  example, payslip, bank statement, social welfare receipts.
  • Proof of address, for example, utility bill, official corresponding from an Irish state agency .
  • Appropriate fee.

All first -time applicants for an adult passport who are resident in the state have to supply a photocopy of their public services card for identification propose. If your previous passport was issued to you when you were child and has not yet expired, then your application is considered a renewal application and not first-time application .

Born in Ireland

  • Your birth certificate
  • Your civil marriage certificate( if you have changed your surname ).

Born in abroad to Irish-born parent

  • Your birth certificate
  • Your civil marriage certificate
  • Your Irish-born parent’s birth certificate
  • Your Irish-born   parent’s civil  marriage certificate( if applicable).

Citizenship through foreign birth registration

  • Your birth certificate
  • Civil marriage certificate (if you have changed your name)
  • Foreign passport
  • Your foreign birth registration certificate.

Post -nuptial citizenship

  • Your post – nuptial certificate
  • Your birth certificate
  • Your civil marriage certificate


The fees applying for an Irish passport using an post’s passport Express or through an embassy or consulate are :

  • Standard 10-year,34 page passport Rs80
  • Large 10-year, 66 page passport Rs110
  • 5-year passport Rs30.

When  applying in person at  the passport office  the fees are:

  • Standard 10-year,32 page passport Rs95
  • Large 10-year 66 -page passport,Rs125
  • 5-year passport,Rs45.

You can pay for your Irish passport through passport Express or at passport office public Counter if you are living in Ireland.

How to apply

If you are living in Ireland then you can apply using passport Express or in  person at a passport office. If you are living in abroad you can apply in person or using ordinary or registered post to your near Irish embassy.
