Chester Bennington is a name known all too well. The late singer was most famous for being the lead vocalist of the rock band Linkin Park. He was born in Phoenix, Arizona on 20th march 1976. When he was eleven years old, his parents got divorced. Bennington’s father gained his custody, but when he turned seventeen he moved in with his mother. During his career, Bennington had always been vocal about his alcohol and drug abuse when he was in his teens. He also voiced out in interviews about him being bullied and sexually harassed when he was younger.
Chester Bennington said that since he could never tell about the sexual abuse at that time in fear of being called gay or a lair. He said the circumstances were so bad that he wanted to commit murder and disappear. The only comfort he got was from drawing pictures, writing poems and songs.
Chester Bennington is survived by his wife Tandila Ann Bently whom he married in 2006, and by his 6 children. His children from his marriage with Tandila are Tyler Lee Bennington born in 2006 and in 2011 he had his twins Lily and Lila. His son Draven Sebastian was born in 2002 from his marriage with Samatha Marie Olit; they were married from 1996 to 2005. When Bennington was in a relationship with Elka Brand, he had a child with her named Jamie, who was born in 1996. Later in 2006, he adopted Elka’s other son Isaiah.
When Bennington first started his music career, he was part of the band Sean Dowell and his friends in 1993. He later left that band and formed one of his own called Grey Daze, which he was a part of till 1998. After quitting Grey Daze, he struggled to find his footing in the music industry. He was on the verge of giving up on his music career when he was approached by Jeff Blue. He offered Bennington an audition with the people who would later be Linkin Park’s future members.
His first audition was a success and Linkin Park back then was called Xero. He worked together with Mike Shinoda, Linkin Park’s other vocalist. However they were unable to find a record deal, even though they made really good progress together. Jeff Blue stepped in a second time and helped them sign a deal with Warner bros records. On 2th October 2000, Hybrid, Linkin Park’s debut album was released.
In the 2005, Bennington along with Ryan Shuck and Amir Derakh founded Dead by sunrise; which made a live debut in 2008. In 2009 their debut album Out of Ashes was released. In 2013, Bennington was recruited by the band Stone Temple Pilots in order to replace Scott Weiland, their former lead singer. Bennington immediately accepted the offer. He said that it had always been his dream to sing lead vocals for Stone Temple Pilots. The band released their first single with Bennington called Out of Time on 19th may 2013. However in 2015, he departed from the bamd with little fanfare, owing to his prior commitments with Linkin Park.
Chester Bennington died at the age of 41 on 20th July 2017 by committing suicide. He was found hanging in his apartment in Los Angeles by his house keeper. His death was confirmed by Mike Shinoda on his twitter account when he tweeted “Shocked and heartbroken, but it’s true. An official statement will come out as soon as we have one.” He died on the birthday of his close friend Chris Cornell who had also committed suicide earlier this year in May. Bennington’s struggle with alcohol was no secret, but his death took the entire world by surprise. His music has warmed the hearts of millions around the world. Although we wish we could have done more to give back to him what he gave to world, Chester Bennington will forever be cherished in our hearts.
